Sigma Season

“This season we were way more of a team than at the start, everyone connected more and bonded more,” Leila said.

This season the girls lacrosse team improved in many ways. “I would describe it as a growth season,” said Mr. Waskowitz, the head of the middle school and girls lacrosse coach. “Everybody had to set personal goals to a certain degree and grow in that way. But also we had to grow together as a team,” Mr. Waskowitz added.

“The season was pretty sigma,” said 8th grade student Kenzie Motch. Sigma is slang for cool and tough, which also describes the season. Another 8th grader, Leila Head, described the season as educational because every player learned new skills.

This season the Girls Lacrosse destroyed the competition with a 9-3 record. This pleased Mr. Waskowitz. “This group of players was a nice group of athletes to work with,” Mr. Waskowitz said. The team started out with a win streak but then they lost to Wyoming. “There are x amount of days in front of you, 12 games, and it’s like, okay, you got to get it together, you can’t take the easy route,” Mr. Waskowitz said. The team remained steady throughout the rest of the season finishing with a very impressive record.

Mr. Waskowitz said that one of his big goals for the season was to make sure that the team worked together. Kenzie Motch explained how one of the ways the team accomplished this goal was helping each other by giving each other pointers. “The girls on this team came together much more quickly than other teams have come together,” Mr. Waskowitz said.

Another important aspect of the season was working on skills and understanding the game. “The purpose of being on a team is you wanna win but you wanna master the game and work together,” Mr. Waskowitz said. He said that he saw the new players, some who have never even picked up a stick before, excel at the end of the season. He was so proud to see them in the final game “catch the ball like they’ve been playing for years.” Throughout the season every player was progressing and so was the team.

Extra fun things were added onto the season that made it very special, like going to get ice cream and Lacrosse Olympics. The team went to The Dipper and had treats and got awards during the last practice. “Mr. Waskowitz tricked us into having a scrimmage but instead we got ice cream and it was really fun,” Leila said.
