Seven Hills School—Have you ever walked down the hall and wished you were on the runway? We unlocked the perspective of fashion in the Seven Hills Middle School community, from jerseys to dresses, and dug deeper to examine how people express themselves through fashion.
Inspiration
Most people start their outfits with an idea of how they want to look. This can range from your favorite social media influencer all the way to how the teacher you see in the halls every day chooses to dress. Here’s a peek at what inspires people the most.
Athletes have a large influence on how kids dress these days. Johnny Khalil says, “Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s pregame outfits are one of my biggest inspirations.” Muhammad Raja agrees, “His swag is so tough.” Others get influenced by NFL stars. Law Kennedy says, “I really love Joe Burrows fits.”
Others get their inspiration from the past. Mr. Waskowitz says, “My father… He was a very individual dresser… He wore a lot of outrageous clothing.” Once his father passed away, his daughters started influencing him to dress like his father. He says, “My daughters started buying me colorful pieces.” From that point on, Mr. Waskowitz started wearing and representing himself in these clothing pieces.
Finding The Outfit
After the inspiration is found, it is time to pick the outfit. People around Seven Hills all decided how to choose their day-to-day outfits differently.
Mahammed Raja says “Sometimes my outfit depends on the weather but mainly my mood.”
Not only do people use their mood to influence them, but they also go with what they know. Ms. Niedlien-Dial says, “You almost never see me out of heels.”
Others pick their outfits based on how others will feel. Cadence Jackson says, “I choose my outfit based on what’s going to turn heads.” Johnny Khalil agrees adding “My outfits are based off of if they’re flashy or not. I love bright colors.”
Where Do They Buy Their Clothes?
The way all people start with fashion is first getting their clothes. People from around Seven Hills all vary from high sensible fashion stores to athletic stores. The most worn athletic brand is Nike. As Law Kennedy says the Nike sets “are tuff (or tough)” and many other middle school members would agree.
Another big athletic Store is Dicks Sporting Goods. A lot of students and faculty members buy clothes there because “It’s a great place especially for a lot of nice soft athletic wear,” says Law Kennedy.
People also shop online, but many in the Seven Hills community are big on thrifting. It’s a great way to recycle and repurpose clothes.
Expression through clothes
Many people have different reasons on why they believe that they should express themselves through their fashion. People say that expression through fashion is a way to show their identity and individuality, while others say they see their expression as a billboard.
One of the most notable ways of fashion expression is the way Madame Kalubi expresses herself. She said “For me, I can share my identity through my clothes because they are unusual, the colors and the fabric.” She goes on to say that not a lot of people pull it off, and she likes that she can.
Mr. Waskowitz says, “People see it and it’s kinda like my billboard,” as stated earlier.
The students and faculty of The Seven Hills Middle School all have different styles and fashion choices that show who they are and the way they are inside.
