CINCINNATI- The week of January 20th was filled with many exciting events surrounding winter sports. The basketball bash on Thursday the 23rd was open to all of the Seven Hills Community to watch the middle school Boys and Girls basketball A teams showcase their games against Summit.
Seven Hills winter spirit night followed the day after on Friday the 24th. The school was invited to watch the middle school boy’s A team play against CCD, followed by the junior varsity boy’s basketball game, and finally the boy’s varsity basketball game to end the night.
Henry Wenzel’s favorite part about spirit night and the basketball bash is “Everybody coming together and uniting as a community”.
Throughout the whole week there were a range of spirit days to prepare for the exciting events later in the week.
Spirit week
Spirit weeks lead up to every big event at Seven Hills. This year’s winter spirit week consisted of winter pajamas on Tuesday, followed by rhyme without a reason on Wednesday. To commemorate the middle school girls and boys A team playing, the theme was blue-out on Thursday. The last day was Seven Hills spirit wear to represent the school’s pride.

Basketball Bash
To encourage student support at athletic events the school plans a Basketball Bash for students, athletes, and the rest of the community. Both middle school basketball A teams played Summit Country Day. The Girls A game launched off the night with a great win, which brought a lot of energy to the crowd.
Skylar Tyus said before the game that everyone was calm or as she stated “Everyone seemed fine and just happy.” The environment on the court and in the crowd was great to keep the girls calm, yet lively. Alex Krause says “It is good to have teammates that can play off of your strengths.” In their interviews, both girls mentioned how they believe skills like getting layups and getting a lot of rebounds is what really helped the team win the game.
Coach Hanley says she “Loves coaching middle schoolers, I think they are still coachable” and her favorite part is watching the girls get from point A to point B and helping all the players grow closer with bonding experiences.
The boys team followed and had a tough loss, but gave their game all they had. Henry Wenzel who plays as a center says “I never get nervous.” While Henry doesn’t get nervous, he says the best way to help his nervous teammates is to “cheer them up like a good mate.”
Henry describes his coach as “just a chill guy” when Coach Combs gives pep talks to encourage his team during their games. Landon, the point guard, is described by Henry as “shifty” and when asked about the crowd at the Basketball Bash, Landon says “it’s nice to have everyone there.”
Landon says Coach Combs tells them to “Play, don’t look at the scoreboard, just play until you get subbed out.” All in all, these teams have great strengths that each individual brings to their team and sensational coaches to guide them along.

Spirit Night
Friday, January 24th was the annual Winter Spirit night. This year we were able to watch multiple good games. The boys middle school basketball A team kicked off the night against CCD. They had a hard loss, but like the night before gave the game their all.
Next was a very exhilarating Junior Varsity basketball game. The whole team participated towards the win. Seven Hills dominated the whole game winning 59-27. The crowd showed a new-found liveliness that powered through the whole night.
Following the Junior Varsity game was the Varsity game. This game brought in most of the high schoolers who had a lot of support to show. They had a spirit day where they all wore jerseys.
The Varsity Boys played their rivals Cincinnati Country Day. This game was thrilling. Not only with the players but with the support from the fans. Every time there was a play in Seven Hills favor, the crowd went WILD.
They pushed through until the end with an amazing performance, but a hard-fought loss to the game with the end score of 49-40 in favor of Cincinnati Country Day.
